ELTON IS BACK
Our best rated junior Chess
player, Elton Joseph 17, student at the College of the Bahamas had already
won in 2003 and showed why his rating is well deserved, by winning the
Family Guardian Scholastic 2005 played last week at CH Reeves.
The
day was not an easy one for our young champion since the under 20
tournament where he belongs had all the best rated players, including
Lemaro Thompson, who won last year.
After winning his own tournament Elton had to beat the winners in the
other age categories before receiving from Mr. Gino Miller the Family
Guardian trophy for the overall champion 2005.
The under 20 tournament was a Round Robin competition between seven
players where each player lost at least one game. Lemaro Thompson who was
eligible to play in the 13 to 15 age group accepted the challenge to move
up to the next category at the invitation of the tournament director Mr.
Warren Seymour. Lemaro, who is15 years old and was the 2004 Champion had
the second rating of all 75 participants.
In the under 10 tournament, the biggest representation came from South
Haven Academy that took last year all the first places but this time Akini
Morris, the only student representing Palmdale Primary school, won the
tournament. Mikala Allen and Talbot McKinney both from South Haven Academy
finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. In 4th and 5th positions Matthew Sutton
and Zachary Thurman from Unicorn Village showed that this school is coming
on very well for its first participation.
The 10 to 12 tournament was logically dominated by Lavardo Rolle from St.
Augustine's College, who in spite his 12 years of age, is already a
seasoned player who represented the Bahamas twice abroad.
Finally, in the 13 to 15 tournament Sanchez Brown from CH Reeves won 5
games out of 5 in a 28 players group in spite of the presence of Lincoln
Knowles, who had the best rating after Lemaro Thompson had moved to the
under 20 tournament.
