The Pohlemus Darling Memorial
Chess Championship was held at L.W. Young High School on the
island of New Providence on Saturday, May 12th, 2007.
The tournament was a four round
swiss tournament. After four rounds of chess play the Bahamas
Junior Champion Elton Joseph emerged as the winner with a
perfect score. Elton who was playing in his first tournament
since his disappointing finish in The 35th Bahamas
National Chess Championship in 2006. Elton finished 9th in
the ten player Bahamas Chess Nationals. He seemed to return
with a vengeance in the Pohlemus Darling Memorial which was a
Rapid Tournament. Elton faced six time Bahamas National
Chess Champion Franklyn Gibson in the final round of the
tournament and walked away with an impressive win. Elton has
produced very good results against Franklyn over the past year
by winning all the games they played against each other in
Federation major tournaments. Elton won games against
Franklyn in both the 35th Bahamas Nationanl Chess Championship
and the New Providence Invitational 2006 which were both FIDE
rated. Elton's FIDE rating is 1896.

The other winners were Howard
Taylor of Grand Bahama Island in the Reserve Division, Dante
Daleney in the Under 1200 Division and Donovan Williamson in
the Rook Division.
In February of this year, Howard
finished third in the Freeport Rapid Chess Tournament which
was the first The Bahamas Chess Federation organised and
hosted a Chess Tournament on the Island of Grand Bahama. The
Bahamas Chess Federation is planning a Grand Bahama Chess
Championship to be held later this year.
Young Dante Delaney and Donovan
Willamson are continuing to post good results in their
respective category. Both Dante Delaney and Donovan
Williamson finsihed in the top three in the Under 14 and Under
10 Divisions respectively in the 1st Bahamas Youth
Championship which was held in February of this year.
The next tournament on The
Bahamas Chess Federation calendar is the Scholastic Chess Team
Championship schedule for 23rd June.
