ELTON WINS POHLEMUS DARLING CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2007

The Pohlemus Darling Memorial Chess Championship was held at L.W. Young High School on the island of New Providence on Saturday, May 12th, 2007.

The tournament was a four round swiss tournament.  After four rounds of chess play the Bahamas Junior Champion Elton Joseph emerged as the winner with a perfect score. Elton who was playing in his first tournament since his disappointing finish in The 35th Bahamas National  Chess Championship in 2006.  Elton finished 9th in the ten player Bahamas Chess Nationals.  He seemed to return with a vengeance in the Pohlemus Darling Memorial which was a Rapid Tournament.  Elton  faced six time Bahamas National Chess Champion Franklyn Gibson in the final round of  the tournament and walked away with an impressive win.  Elton has produced very good results against Franklyn over the past year by winning all the games they played against each other in Federation major tournaments.  Elton won games against Franklyn in both the 35th Bahamas Nationanl Chess Championship and the New Providence Invitational 2006 which were both FIDE rated.  Elton's FIDE rating is 1896.

The other winners were Howard Taylor of Grand Bahama Island in the Reserve Division, Dante Daleney in the Under 1200 Division and Donovan Williamson in the Rook Division.

In February of this year, Howard finished third in the Freeport Rapid Chess Tournament which was the first The Bahamas Chess Federation organised and hosted a Chess Tournament on the Island of Grand Bahama.  The Bahamas Chess Federation is planning a Grand Bahama Chess Championship to be held later this year.

Young Dante Delaney and Donovan Willamson are continuing to post good results in their respective category.  Both Dante Delaney and Donovan Williamson finsihed in the top three in the Under 14 and Under 10 Divisions respectively in the 1st Bahamas Youth Championship which was held in February of this year.

The next tournament on The Bahamas Chess Federation calendar is the Scholastic Chess Team Championship schedule for 23rd June.
